The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
