Social Media Content Creators Fueling Unofficial Market for Unapproved Weight-Loss Medication

An underground economy for unlicensed slimming medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.

Investigational Treatment Gaining Popularity Online

Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing properties. Viewers are encouraged to message these profiles privately for supplier links, while also receiving discount codes.

Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a robust market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” images, administration instructions and claims of rapid British shipping. Vendors promote the drug there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

This medication is an investigational injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist individuals lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Express Concerns

Nevertheless, doctors and pharmacists have warned that the distribution of what remains an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to users administering substances of unknown origin.

Several professionals stated the popularity for retatrutide could be connected to the increasing price of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Implementation

Marketing retatrutide on social media or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be promoted or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators attempt to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but promotion and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer laws, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or prison.

Service Response and Material Elimination

According to the social media company, the platform has taken down problematic content and prohibited related keywords and query recommendations. The organization stated it was dedicated to maintaining the platform safe and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Online Trading Activities

Investigations also found communities with up to 9,000 participants marketing the experimental drug using the platform's integrated search feature, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, filled with photos of slimming results, positive reviews and step-by-step guides for preparing or injecting at home.

After minutes of joining one group, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases occur. The seller sent an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None inquired about body mass, health issues or past usage.

Item Information and Costs

Within these groups, posts show black plastic parcels with postal service labels, stating to contain fresh supplies. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens usually sold at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how long a pen should be used, vendors give contradictory responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Moderation and Safety Actions

A spokesperson for Telegram stated it actively monitored harmful content on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“People are administering materials they can’t verify. Even if the research behind this drug is valid, these online versions may not contain what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in interest to recent cost increases for authorized weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are turning to social media. But fake treatments are extremely dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.

Her staff has already seen patients harmed by self-injection from unverified sources. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Statement

A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet approved … may subject users to potentially serious health risks”.
