Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
