Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the right to question specific rulings made by the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
